For three seasons, Michelle Buteau has championed the idea that bigger is better, and Survival of the Thickest closes its final chapter with the same confidence, humor, and heart that made it one of Netflix’s most refreshing comedies.
Season 3 picks up three months into Mavis and Luca’s rekindled relationship as the couple begins contemplating their next chapter together. One minute Luca’s seeing Mavis in her bonnet, the next they’re talking babies. Motherhood, commitment, and the realities of building a future quickly become the emotional center of the season, allowing Mavis to confront questions about love, purpose, and legacy without sacrificing the show’s signature wit.
With an all-Black writers’ room, the series tells stories that feel lived-in and authentic, centering Black women, queer identities, and plus-size experiences with honesty instead of tokenism. Representation isn’t treated as a talking point, but it’s simply woven into the fabric of the series. Through humor, vulnerability, and unapologetic self-love, the series celebrates abundance in every sense of the word: culture, community, and confidence.
More than glamorous wardrobes and runway moments, the fashion industry is portrayed as both aspirational and exploitative. Through Mavis’ work with independent designers and her experiences navigating an industry where larger brands often profit from the creativity of smaller voices. The series explores artistic ownership, impostor syndrome, and the unequal power dynamics that shape fashion. As Mavis reflects, she learned at 14 that the fashion world wasn’t designed for bodies like hers, inspiring her to create inclusive spaces rather than wait for permission.
The ensemble continues to shine, bolstered by guest appearances from LaQuan Smith, Jenna Lyons, Ashley Graham, Ice-T, D.L. Hughley, Ilana Glazer, and Samyra. One of the season’s greatest joys is watching Michelle Buteau and RonReaco Lee share the screen once again. After previously starring together in First Wives Club, the pair effortlessly rekindle their natural chemistry in Survival of the Thickest.
However, if this season has one disappointment, it’s the abrupt departure of Tasha Smith’s character, whose absence is acknowledged only briefly before the story moves on. While romance remains part of the equation, Season 3 wisely places Mavis and Khalil’s friendship front and center, reinforcing the idea that community, friendship, and chosen family can be just as meaningful as the one you’re born into.
Survival of the Thickest’s final message is beautifully simple: take up space and always go out in style. All eight episodes of season three is now streaming on Netflix
