“Wednesday” Returns: Still Creepy and Charming

Skip It or Stream It? – Wednesday Season 2 TV Review

🗓 Premiere Date: August 6th and September 3rd
📺 Where to Watch: Netflix
🎭 Genre: Mystery, Supernatural, Drama
📖 Number of Episodes: 4 epi pt1, 4 epi pt2
⏳ Runtime: 50 minutes

The Setup

After a three-year hiatus, Wednesday returns with a much-anticipated second season split into two parts. The story continues to follow Wednesday Addams as she unravels new mysteries at Nevermore Academy while confronting her family’s dark legacy.

Themes & Plots in Wednesday Season 2

Themes:

  • Identity & Belonging: Wednesday and the “outcasts” continue their journey to fit into the strange, supernatural world of Nevermore. Wednesday is balancing her dark sensibilities with unexpected connections.
  • Secrets & Deception: The season deepens the mystery, with hidden agendas and shifting loyalties keeping everyone on edge.
  • Legacy & Power: The impact of the Addams family history plays a bigger role as Wednesday confronts what her heritage truly means.

Typical Plots:

  • Two-Part Release: The split-season format fragments the pacing and flow, making it harder to maintain suspense and viewer investment.
  • Dark Cinematography: The extremely dim editing style forces viewers to watch in near darkness to catch crucial details, which can be frustrating.
  • Strong Performances: Despite narrative weaknesses, the cast delivers compelling portrayals that keep the show engaging.

Creators & Key Cast

Creator: Alfred Gough, Miles Millar

Main Cast:

  • Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams – Deadpan, sharp, and charismatic, Ortega remains the standout.
  • Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair – Wednesday’s colorful and caring roommate.
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams – Regal and mysterious, anchoring the family legacy.
  • Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams – Warm and playful, a grounding force.
  • Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin – A layered presence with shifting loyalties.
  • Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems – Authoritative and enigmatic school principal.

First Impression

The wait was long, and the split release is a misstep, but once you settle into the eerie halls of Nevermore again, the atmosphere, wardrobe, and performances remind you why this show captured attention in the first place. However, the overly dark visuals and a somewhat unfocused narrative pull back from greatness.

What Works?

Writing & Storytelling: The plot can feel scattered, but intriguing character moments and suspenseful sequences help.
Performances & Characters: Ortega shines as always; the supporting cast adds depth and charm.
Visuals & Direction: Set design and wardrobe remain lush and gothic, creating an immersive mood.
Score & Sound Design: Music enhances the creepy, whimsical tone perfectly.

What Doesn’t?

Weaknesses in Story or Execution: The split season disrupts pacing, and the narrative sometimes feels directionless.
Acting or Casting Issues: Minor – some secondary characters are underdeveloped.
Technical Flaws: The extremely dark color grading makes it difficult to watch in normal lighting conditions.

🎭 Audience Match

If you like: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Riverdale, Nancy Drew
Best for: Fans of gothic teen mysteries, supernatural drama, and Wednesday Addams as a character.
Not for: Viewers who prefer clear storytelling or brighter visuals.

📌 Final Verdict: Skip or Stream?STREAM IT

Despite frustrating editing choices and a fragmented release, Wednesday Season 2’s strong performances, sumptuous design, and addictive gothic atmosphere make it worth streaming — just be sure to watch in a dark room.
