Wings of His Own: A Soaring Tale of Identity and Invention

🗓 Premiere Date: July 23, 2025
📺 Where to Watch: Hulu
🎭 Genre: Historical Drama, Adventure
📖 Number of Episodes: 8
⏳ Runtime: 35–45 minutes

The Setup

Washington Black follows the extraordinary journey of an eleven-year-old boy enslaved on a Barbados plantation who escapes to freedom, science, and self-discovery after a chance encounter with an eccentric inventor. What begins as a desperate bid for survival evolves into an epic coming-of-age journey across continents, spanning slavery, science, loss, liberation, and love. As Washington reckons with the trauma of his past and the uncertainty of the future, he discovers that true freedom may lie not only in escape, but in the radical act of self-definition.

Creators & Key Cast

Created by: Selwyn Seyfu Hinds
Based on the novel by: Esi Edugyan

Main Cast:

  • Ernest Kingsley Jr. as Washington “Wash” Black – a brilliant young boy who escapes slavery and pursues science, freedom, and belonging.
  • Tom Ellis as Christopher “Titch” Wilde – an eccentric British inventor who forms a complicated bond with Wash.
  • Iola Evans as Tanna Goff – a free-spirited artist who becomes a companion and catalyst for Wash’s journey.
  • Edward Bluemel as Philip Wilde – Titch’s emotionally wounded brother whose presence stirs tension.
  • Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Miss Angie – a fiercely intelligent woman who challenges Wash’s beliefs about faith, identity, and autonomy.
  • Sterling K. Brown as Medwin Harris – a charismatic leader Wash encounters in Nova Scotia, pushing him to reconsider what kind of man he wants to become.

Themes & Plots in Washington Black

Themes:

  • Freedom & Identity: Wash’s journey is driven by a longing to define himself beyond the institution of slavery and the traumas that shaped his youth.
  • Science vs. Faith: The series contrasts divine purpose with intellectual autonomy as Wash wrestles with how he understands the world and his place in it.
  • Family Lost & Found: Blood ties, chosen family, and mentorship collide as Wash steps into adulthood, seeking connection while confronting abandonment.

Typical Plots:

  • Escape from Barbados: Wash’s life changes when he joins Titch in fleeing the plantation, setting off a world-spanning adventure.
  • The Airship & The Expo: Their journey takes them across the Atlantic as they aim to present their scientific breakthroughs at London’s World Expo.

  • Emotional Betrayals: Titch’s emotional unavailability and mysterious disappearances challenge Wash’s sense of trust and worth.

  • Self-Discovery in Halifax: As an adult, Wash forges new relationships and builds a legacy rooted in art, science, and truth.

What Works?

Writing & Storytelling: Smart, lyrical, and faithful to the spirit of the source material, the script carefully balances historical weight with fantastical hope.
Performances & Characters: Ernest Kingsley Jr. gives a breakout performance full of quiet strength. Tom Ellis plays Titch with tragic charm, while Iola Evans and Sterling K. Brown breathe heart into Wash’s new world.
Visuals & Direction: The cinematography, especially in Halifax and London feels painterly, highlighting nature, steam-age invention, and emotional solitude.
Score & Sound Design: Strings meet steel in an evocative soundtrack that tracks Wash’s inner shifts across countries and decades.

What Doesn’t?

Weaknesses in Story or Execution: Some pacing issues in the middle episodes and side characters who feel underdeveloped compared to the central trio.
Acting or Casting Issues: While the core cast is stellar, a few background performances occasionally veer melodramatic.
Technical Flaws: Minor continuity hiccups and an overly clean aesthetic in certain flashback scenes slightly lessen the historical realism.

🎯 Audience Match

If you like: The Underground Railroad, Roots, or The Gilded Age, this is likely for you.

Best for:
Viewers who enjoy slow-burn historical dramas with literary depth, inventive visuals, and emotional journeys.

Not for:
Those seeking action-heavy storytelling or a fast-paced escape drama.
