Smoke: Through the Fog of Fire-Fueled Truths

🗓 Premiere Date: June 27, 2025
📺 Where to Watch: Appletv+
🎭 Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
📖 Number of Episodes: 3 (New Episodes Drop Every Friday), ⏳Runtime: 42-50m

Synopsis

Smoke, adapted from the Firebug podcast, follows arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton), a former firefighter, who teams up with Detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) from Umberland Metro PD. They’ve been called in to help crack two ongoing arson spree cases. One arsonist has terrorized the area for over a year, while the other has been active for six months—both operating without leads. As they work together to track down these firebugs, Dave and Michelle must navigate the complex, high-stakes world of serial arson, combining fieldwork with psychological insight to stop the fires from spreading.

Themes & Plots in Smoke

Themes:

  • Trauma & Redemption: Both leads carry emotional scars: Dave’s firefighting past and Michelle’s troubled childhood shape their motivations and biases
  • Powerlessness & Control: The series uses arson as a metaphor, mundane targets like chip aisles and fast food parlors expose how fire ignites when individuals feel cornered and powerless
  • Trust & Betrayal: As the investigation deepens, Michelle grapples with betrayal, first by a superior, then by her partner, forcing her to question who can truly be trusted

Typical Plots:

  • The Twin Arson Cases: Investigators Michelle Calderone and Dave Gudsen race to solve two distinct series of fires, one targeting grocery-store aisles, the other suburban homes, putting them under immense pressure
  • Formation of the Team: Michelle, recently marginalized after a workplace scandal, is assigned to assist Dave, her outsider status bringing a critical perspective and friction
  • Slow-Burn & Atmosphere: The plot balances atmospheric, procedural investigation with intensely personal storylines, often sacrificing pacing for mood and character depth

Creators & Key Cast

Creator

  • Dennis Lehane – Creator, executive producer, and writer of Smoke; acclaimed for Mystic River, Shutter Island, Black Bird, and now this arson‑focused psychological thriller.

Main Cast:

  • Taron Egerton as Dave Gudsen – A retired firefighter turned arson investigator. On screen, he’s affable and intelligent—but beneath the surface, he harbors a dark secret: he is one of the arsonists, using grocery-store chip bags to relieve his inner turmoil.
  • Jurnee Smollett as Detective Michelle Calderone – A driven Metro PD detective whose personal and professional struggles propel her commitment to the case. She grows increasingly suspicious of Gudsen’s erratic behavior.
  • Rafe Spall as Steven Burke – Michelle’s married colleague and supervisor, entangled in workplace politics and personal dynamics.
  • Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as Freddy Fasano – A fast-food worker suspected in one of the arson sprees, representing one of the several criminal angles they’ve been tracking.
  • Hannah Emily Anderson as Ashley Gudsen – Dave’s wife, a librarian caught between devotion and growing alarm over her husband’s odd behavior.
  • Greg Kinnear as Harvey Englehart – The no-nonsense fire chief who oversees the investigation and anchors the procedural framework of the show.
  • John Leguizamo as Esposito – A key supporting figure involved in the arson task force, adding depth and tension to the investigation.

First Impression: Smoke is a strikingly entertaining series that sparked my interest and kept it burning. What truly fuels the show are its compelling performances and sharp dialogue centered around fire, both literal and metaphorical. It’s the kind of storytelling that keeps you wanting to see how far the flames will spread

What Works?

Humanized Supporting Cast: Smoke shines when it fleshes out minor characters, like Freddy the fry cook, giving them believable backstories and emotional resonance. His trajectory from loneliness to violence feels grounded and tragic, not just sensational.
Stunning Fire Visuals: The series treats fire almost as a character, ember glows in dim noir landscapes, and infernos burn with cinematic grandeur. These sequences are visceral, haunting, and masterfully shot.
Lead Chemistry & Performances: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett deliver captivating performances. Their evolving dynamic, initial distrust morphing into tense partnership, adds layered intensity to the mystery.

What Doesn’t Work?

Sluggish Pacing: Many viewers report that the narrative takes its time, perhaps too much. The slow build of mood and character development sometimes sacrifices momentum.
Clichéd, Over-Stuffed Subplots: Numerous side stories. While they occasionally enrich the world, others feel tacked-on and underdeveloped, diluting the main arc.
Uneven Tone & Pretentiousness: At times, stylistic choices, like voiceovers, dramatic title cards, and noir flourishes, undercut rather than elevate the story, making it feel self-conscious.

🎭 Audience Match

  • If you like: Moody, slow-burn tension of shows like Mare of Easttown or Breaking Bad, emphasizing psychological undercurrents over procedural mechanics
  • Best for: Fans of psychological thrillers rooted in real life, including late reveals that shift the focus from whodunit to why, much like in its true-crime inspiration
  • Not for: Those who expect fast-paced, plot-heavy storytelling, the show moves deliberately, with a focus on mood and character unfolding

📌 Final Verdict: Skip or Stream?

STREAM IT

The slow-burning unraveling of the storyline ignites a flicker of intrigue, fueling the desire to uncover the identity of the two arsonists.
