🗓 Premiere Date: March 11, 2025
📺 Where to Watch: Adult Swim, Max
🎭 Genre: Animation
📖 Number of Episodes: 3 (Episodes drop every Sunday),

Synopsis

Oh My God…YES! Finally, an Afro-futuristic animated series created, directed, and led by Black women. Written and directed by Emmy-nominated writer Adela Williams (Netflix’s My Dad the Bounty Hunter), the series expands on the bold, offbeat world she originally built in her indie comic. It follows the misadventures of three eccentric friends as they navigate femininity in a surreal, technology-driven society.

Themes & Plots in Oh My God…Yes! A Series of Relatable Circumstances

Themes:

  • Navigating Modern Womanhood: The series delves into the complexities of being a woman in a futuristic, tech-driven society, highlighting both challenges and triumphs.
  • Friendship & Solidarity: It emphasizes the strength and support found in female friendships as the protagonists face absurd and unpredictable situations together.
  • Technological Satire: The show offers a humorous critique of society’s overreliance on technology, presenting exaggerated scenarios that reflect contemporary issues.
  • Surreal Humor: Through bizarre events and characters, the series employs surrealism to explore everyday life, adding a unique comedic twist.
  • Sexual Exploration: It openly addresses themes of sexuality, dating, and relationships, portraying them with candidness and humor.

Typical Plots:

  • Demon Baby Dilemma: Sunny and Tulip clash over parenting a giant demon baby, while Ladi is determined to destroy it.
  • Arachnid Romance: After a breakup, Tulip rebounds with a rapping spider, leading Sunny and Ladi to intervene, believing her new arachnid boyfriend is trouble.
  • Tech Gone Haywire: The trio deals with malfunctioning gadgets that disrupt their lives, leading to comedic attempts to survive without modern conveniences.
  • Virtual Reality Mishap: An experiment with virtual reality leads the friends into absurd scenarios, blurring the lines between the digital and real worlds.
  • Intergalactic Dating: Tulip’s venture into online dating results in encounters with extraterrestrial suitors, causing chaos and laughter.

Creators & Key Cast

Creators:

  • Adele “Supreme” Williams: Creator and executive producer, known for her work on My Dad the Bounty Hunter.
  • Dominique Braud: Executive producer with experience on The Simpsons.

Main Cast:

  • Adele “Supreme” Williams as Sunny: One of the three main characters navigating womanhood in a tech-driven world.
  • DomiNque Perry as Tulip: Another central character, known for her unique perspective on the group’s adventures.
Xosha Roquemore as Ladi: The third member of the trio, contributing her distinct viewpoint to their shared experiences.

First Impression: Oh My God…Yes!  delivers a bold and imaginative reimagining of futuristic womanhood, weaving surreal humor with incisive social commentary. Its portrayal of Los Angeles as an extraterrestrial landscape adds to its uniqueness, resulting in a setting that is both familiar and unsettling. The series stands out within Adult Swim’s lineup, not only for its inventive storytelling and dynamic characters but also for its refreshing portrayal of Black women navigating space in animation—an underrepresented perspective, especially on a major network like Adult Swim. While it may not be as overtly comedic as expected, its absurdity and dystopian undertones make for an engaging and thought-provoking watch.

What Works?

  • Writing & Storytelling: The series offers a fresh perspective by centering on Black women’s experiences in a tech-driven society, blending absurd humor with relatable themes.
Performances & Characters: The dynamic between the three main characters—Sunny, Tulip, and Ladi—is engaging, showcasing strong chemistry and distinct personalities that resonate with viewers.
  • Visuals & Direction: The show’s animation style is vibrant and imaginative, effectively portraying a futuristic South Central Los Angeles with creativity and flair.
  • Score & Sound Design: The music and sound effects complement the show’s lively atmosphere, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

What Doesn’t?

  • Weaknesses in Story or Execution: Some episodes may feel disjointed or overly absurd, potentially alienating viewers seeking cohesive narratives.
  • Acting or Casting Issues: While the main cast delivers strong performances, some supporting characters lack depth, making certain interactions less impactful.
  • Technical Flaws: Occasional inconsistencies in animation quality are noticeable, though they do not significantly detract from the overall experience.

🎭 Audience Match

  • If you like: Futurama,The Boondocks, or Rick and Morty, you might enjoy this series.
  • Best for: Adults who appreciate satirical humor, futuristic settings, and narratives centered on diverse female perspectives.
  • Not for: Viewers uncomfortable with explicit content or those preferring traditional, linear storytelling.

📌 Final Verdict: Skip or Stream?

STREAM IT
